Volunteers See Sights And Sounds Of Coast

BILOXI (WLOX) -- They are spending countless hours rebuilding lives and homes in South Mississippi. They're also giving our local economy a boost.

It's mostly work, but there is some playtime for these Habitat volunteers.

"There are a lot of volunteers that drove in, a lot of volunteers that flew in, so you're likely to run into people anywhere," said volunteer John Lang.

Lang is just one of the volunteers who's trying to find time to take in the sights and sounds of South Mississippi.

"Some people have cars and are hanging out around town and others are just hanging out at the restaurants and enjoying the businesses here," Lang said.

"I've been to Wal-Mart, of course, and Starbucks," said volunteer Hilda McComie.

Some will take advantage of familiar businesses. However, others are enjoying walks along the beach, not to mention touring some of South Mississippi's historic landmarks.

Many of the volunteers are staying at Yankie Stadium and some of the other hotels along the coast. Others are enjoying the amenities and entertainment at our casino resorts.

"It's nice to be able, at the end of the day after we're done working here, to go down and put a couple of bucks in the slot machine. I was kind of successful yesterday. I put a ten in and got 50 out, so I did pretty well yesterday," Lang said.

Volunteers agree that there is very little time for slots and sight seeing, but they're grateful to be able to build homes and form new relationships with each other and people along the Gulf Coast.
