Legislature Passes Second Nissan Incentive Package

Gov. Ronnie Musgrove has signed into law a new incentive package to support a second phase of construction at the Nissan plant in Madison County.

Musgrove acted minutes after Mississippi lawmakers gave overwhelming approval Friday to the package totaling $68 million.

Nissan is considering upping its investment by $500 million and creating 1,300 more jobs at its auto plant being built in Canton.

The incentives, weighted heavily on infrastructure, were requested by Governor Ronnie Musgrove and the Mississippi Development Authority.

The House passed the bill 110-to-10 while the Senate passed it 47-4. While the bills were passed in different forms, the final version passed by overwhelming margins.

If the state and Japanese automaker can agree on terms, the project's price tag would climb to $1.43 billion and the job total to 5,300.

Nissan is scheduled to begin production next year in Madison County, about 15 miles north of Jackson.
