Governor Calls Special Session For Nissan

Governor Ronnie Musgrove is calling a special session June 21st to push an economic package to support expansion of the Nissan project in Canton.

Nissan Motor Company has a $930 million plant under construction in Madison County.

In May, Mississippi officials said they hoped Nissan's plans to boost sales worldwide would bring more jobs to the state. Musgrove did not say how many jobs the expansion might bring.

Nissan officials say Nissan intends to boost production by a million vehicles from $2.6 million and raise profit margins by March 2005.

In Canton, the company is a little more than a year away from the scheduled opening of its plant.

Nissan initially said it would make 250,000 vehicles a year in Mississippi and employ 4,000 at full production.

Nissan's only other U.S. production facilities are in Tennessee. In North America, Nissan also makes vehicles in Mexico.

Mississippi created a package of incentives worth $295 million to attract Nissan to the state.
