Governor Orders More Belt Tightening In Next Fiscal Year

For the second year in a row, Gov. Ronnie Musgrove is asking state agencies to spend only 45 percent of their money in the first six months of the new fiscal year.

"It is the prudent, proper and wise thing to do,'' Musgrove said Thursday at a Capitol news conference.

The new fiscal year begins July 1.

Musgrove said studies by several groups including the National Governors Association show that the states' economies are not yet ready for fully recovery.

Agencies usually spend half their budgets during the first six months of a fiscal year.

Last year, Musgrove made the same request of agencies at the same time he was forced to cut spending government-wide.
