Prisoner Escapes From Hospital

A state prisoner escaped Tuesday from Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, where he was undergoing medical treatment.

Mississippi Department of Corrections officials said Wednesday that Frederick Smith, 32, was taken to the hospital Tuesday night from the Pascagoula Restitution Center. MDOC officials said Smith fled the hospital while waiting for discharge papers and medication.

Smith is serving an eight-year prison sentence with five years suspended for grand larceny in Harrison County.

The MDOC said Smith is not considered dangerous.
