BILOXI (WLOX) -- The Biloxi Police Department is growing. Saturday, the department opened its newest location.
There was crime tape, guns and even a K-9 unit at Edgewater Mall, but this wasn't a crime scene. Biloxi officers were on duty to celebrate their new satellite office.
"Any opportunity we can to interact with the citizens of Biloxi and even people visiting Biloxi, we want that opportunity," said Officer Thomas Goldsworthy.
Goldsworthy was just one of the officers who decided to trade in his handcuffs for an apron.
"There's always a negative side of law enforcement, but there's also a positive side. We're trying to show that and be a part of that," he said.
Officers spent the day educating people about Biloxi's Police Department outside of their new Edgewater satellite location. But don't be confused, they're not mall security.
"We have a lot of officers out west that have to go all the way back to the station on Porter Avenue, and that eats up time. And by having the satellite station here, they are able to do the traffic reports and get them completed, and keep them in the same area that they are patrolling," Goldsworthy said.
The faster response time will enable officers to better serve the residents and visitors of Biloxi, like Darlene Sauve.
"This is very, very interesting. I have two nephews who are police officers, so this is very, very interesting for me,"Sauve said.
Sauve is a snowbird from Michigan.
"I feel very, very safe here. I drive by myself here and I'm not afraid," she said.
She's not afraid because she knows these officers are only a phone call away. And now that they are expanding their services, she's confident about the decision she made to call South Mississippi her second home.
The new satellite office is on the west end of the mall, between the food court and Dillards.
