Man Drowns Two Miles Off Coast

An Ocean Springs man was found dead Monday in a partially submerged shrimp boat about two miles off Belle Fontaine Beach on the Mississippi coast.

Authorities said the death of Gregory Skrmetti was likely accidental.

Lt. Claude Pittman with the State Marine Patrol of the Department of Marine Resources said high winds may have caused the boat to be swamped.

Skrmetti's body was found lying near the stern of the boat. Pittman said the man was not wearing a life vest.

The body was found by DMR and Coast Guard personnel. An autopsy has been ordered.

Family members told authorities that Skrmetti purchased the wooden shrimp boat, the Betty Maria, about three weeks ago. They said he often went shrimping alone.
