Work On Hattiesburg Welcome Center May Soon Begin

Construction may finally begin this fall on a long-delayed $900,000 welcome center next to Hattiesburg's Lake Terrace Convention Center.

The city's Convention and Visitors Bureau director, Rick Taylor, says funding is in place but more paperwork must be completed before construction actually begins.

Funding for the project was secured last year through a $500,000 federal transportation grant with the Mississippi Department of Transportation, as well as matching local funds.

Engineering studies on the 4,000-square-foot, two-story building are being forwarded to MDOT's headquarters in Jackson for approval.

Taylor says he anticipates receiving a notice in July from MDOT allowing the bureau to seek bids on construction.

Officials say the convention center was part of the initial plan for the Lake Terrace Convention Center when it was conceived 10 years ago.
