Construction began on the 4,000-square-foot building in January of 2001. But Moss Point city officials promised the new fire department when it annexed parts of Escatawpa about 12 years ago.
"We've been looking for them to move in there for quite a while. We watched the building go up slowly over the years, " said resident Glenn Lennon.
Escatawpa firefighters are glad to finally be in their new building. It's located right in the heart of Escatawpa on Sentinel Drive. Firefighters say it's the perfect location for them to better serve the community.
"Fire spreads fast, and being able to get there quickly and make the initial attack. It really makes a difference," says Captain Mike Shields.
Residents like Glenn Lennon and his wife recently experienced that quick response time. They called 911 when they noticed a neighbors house was on fire. They say firefigthers were there in minutes.
"Yes, it could have been a lot worse. It would have took them longer to get here, " said Lennon.
Both firefighters and residents were promised a new fire station about twelve years ago, when the city annexed the area where the old station is located.
"It takes a lot of time and a lot of money to do things in this world and when you're not a rich city, you just have to take it has it comes, and it's been a bit of a struggle for Moss Point to get us out here, " said Captain Shields.
Firefighters have been in the new building about three weeks.
