Former Surgeon General M. Joycelyn Elders stopped in Biloxi Saturday to talk about how early childhood education is essential to success.
Dr. Elders spoke to the Mississippi Institute on school health, wellness, and safety at Biloxi's Grand Casino.
"If they never show up, never had anything but quit, stop, don't do that, until they come to school on the first day. They start behind, they stay behind, and they never catch up. I'm saying that we need to invest early if we want to make a difference," Elders said.
Elders says children are our most valuable resource, and the best investment we can ever make.
Elders added that because hope, will and drive are determinded by the time a child is five, early education provides the necessary knowledge and skills for healthy children.
