MDOT, Port Leaders Discuss Canal Road Options

GULFPORT (WLOX) -- What the Port of Gulfport ultimately looks like will determine where MDOT builds the new Canal Road.

Thursday, Port Director Don Allee and Southern District Transportation Commissioner Wayne Brown sat down and talked about several Canal Road options.

Brown said the extension down to the port would be somewhere between 28th Avenue and 30th Avenue. But, an exact location depended on how the port was reconfigured.

"It appears from the port, they want us to move further west. We are right now more or less parallel with the railroad. And the port is looking to have access further west. And so, we'll move to the west," Brown told WLOX News.

According to Commissioner Brown, MDOT has already determined Canal Road's route from Interstate 10 to Pass Road, but phase two down to the port is on hold.
