A power outage at the Chevron-Texaco Refinery in Pascagoula caused a small chemical release Wednesday afternoon.
The power went out around 4 p.m. for just a few minutes.
Chevron officials say the real problem came when the refinery's back up electrical system failed to kick in. That triggered the emergency flare system, which is supposed to burn off chemicals. That created a lot of smoke from the flare stacks.
Chevron environmentalist checked the air for pollution but found that everything was okay. No one was hurt.
