Biloxi Council Approves Condo Development

BILOXI (WLOX) -- The Biloxi City Council on Tuesday granted the variances needed to convert the former Saxony Apartment Complex into condominiums. The site, just north of Highway 90, will be called Waterford Place Condominiums.

"They're doing a great job. They're adding condominiums where you can stay there long term, and the project itself has just been upgraded, unbelievably. So, it should be a great thing for the city of Biloxi and adding more homes to our ward," said Ward One Councilman George Lawrence.

The council also approved donating some property to Habitat for Humanity. The land is located at Huffy Alley and Nixon Street. The two parcels of land will be used to build two homes as part of the Jimmy Carter work project.

"It's a very big part of our project. We're looking to build ten houses in East Biloxi as part of the Jimmy Carter deal. This is two of the ten. We have several more to close on, and it's really a big part for us," said Robin Lavine with Habitat for Humanity.

At next Tuesday's meeting, the Council is set to decide on whether or not to approve variances for a mixed use development just west of Keesler Federal Credit Union on Pass Road. A couple of weeks ago, residents of neighboring Edgewater Estates told the planning commission they objected to Bay Village. But residents at Tuesday's meeting spoke in favor of the project.

"I believe the Bay Village Development provides a win-win situation for everybody. The development, if approved, will contribute a lot to the city's tax rolls, provide a number of upscale new residences, and would have the effect, I believe, of increasing the values of properties in the surrounding areas," said one resident.

Another said, " I would love for this project in my back yard. Thank you."

Bay Village would be situated on 27 and a half acres of land that once was also the site of a golf course.
