Opening Arguments Begin Today In Officer Trial

Opening arguments begin Wednesday morning in the case of a Moss Point police officer accused of manslaughter. Steve Strickler is one of three white officers charged in the death of Marcus Malone, a black man who died while in police custody in 1999.

Strickler's defense team and prosecutors questioned more than 200 potential jurors on Tuesday. Assistant District Attorney Ben Saucier told them that the officers didn't intend to kill Marcus Malone, but that they should have understood the dangers and consequences of their actions. Those actions led to Malone's death, and could bring Steve Strickler 20 years in prison if convicted.

The jury is made up of eight men and six women. They will not be sequestered.
