Volunteers Celebrate A Biloxi Family's Homecoming

BILOXI (WLOX) -- There was a homecoming celebration Friday afternoon on Bellman Avenue in East Biloxi. A brand new home was dedicated to the Gaines Family.

Some 115 volunteers spent the past nine weeks building the house. Many of those volunteers, from several states, gathered with the family for the afternoon dedication.

Family members say the new home is "a dream come true." Their old house was destroyed by the storm, when Katrina dumped more than eight feet of water inside.

Willis and Juanita Gaines told WLOX News, "They did a good job. They got it up. And, like I said, we're blessed. We're truly blessed to come from the FEMA trailer, to the cottage, and back to our home is a blessing."

The Biloxi Rotary Club was among the partners on the home building project. The local club received a $10,000 donation from the Locust Valley Rotary Club of New York.

A group called Joining Hands helped organize the volunteers who built the house.
