Iowa Central Eliminates Pearl River From JUCO Division II World Series

The Pearl River Wildcats were no match for Iowa Central in an elimination game at the Division II Junior College World Series in Millington, Tennessee. Iowa Central pounded out a 13-3 win over the Wildcats handing Pearl River its second defeat in the double-elimination tournament.

Pearl River battled back from a 3-2 loss to Northern Oklahoma-Enid late Saturday by beating Brookdale 9-1 on Sunday. However, the Wildcats could contain the bats of Iowa Central. The ten run rule was in affect and the game was called after 5 innings.

First year head coach Jay Artigues enjoyed a banner season at Pearl River leading the Wildcats to 44 wins and 13 losses. His club captured the Region 23 Division II title and Super Regional championship.

The Wildcats gained valuable experience this season, one that should give them another title run in 2003.

Over the tenure of his athletic career, Picasso Nelson Jr. had been many things, including a member of a state championship football team at Oak Grove High School; starting fixture in the University of Southern Mississippi defensive backfield; multi-selection to Conference USA All-Academic team. What he never had been was a long-term spectator, forced to watch from the sidelines because of injury.
