Lights Coming To Airport Road In Gulfport

GULFPORT (WLOX) -- Take a drive down Airport Road in Gulfport and it soon becomes clear what the dark, winding road is missing - lights. Jayme Stanley uses the road on her way to and from night school.

"It can be very difficult. Coming home late at night you never know, you know, if other people on the road can't see as well."

Bruce Frallic, Director of the Gulfport/Biloxi International Airport, wants to make the drive for Stanley and others easier and safer.  The Airport received a $1.4 million grant to replace all the lights lost in Hurricane Katrina along Airport Road from Washington Avenue to Highway 49. But Frallic says the airport ran into a problem while working on the project.

"We found out that we couldn't make the improvements to Airport Road because the airport couldn't spend money on someone else's property."

The property belongs to the city of Gulfport. So, airport leaders got support from coast lawmakers to draw up bills in the House and Senate for the project.  The city says it supports Frallic's move in trying to help them address a big problem on one of its busiest roads.

"Airport Road is a very important thoroughfare through this portion of Gulfport, and it has a lot of traffic. What we really need is a complete relighting of the road."

Provided the bill passes, Frallic says he hopes to get construction started by the end of the year. However, Neil Resh, President of the Gulfport City Council, says they will try to push things along faster and get things started by the summer.
