MDA's Mobile Service Unit Visits D'Iberville

D'IBERVILLE (WLOX) -- After three days on the road in neighboring counties, the Mississippi Development Authority's Mobile Service Center set up shop in front of the D'Iberville Civic Center Wednesday.

"I've been calling and calling and I can't get through to the Jackson office," resident Hardy Jones said. "So when I saw this here, I headed straight over here."

Jones' story is a familiar one.

"I'm living in Biloxi, lost my house over here just around the corner, and I'm building back in D'Iberville."

To do that, he's taking advantage of a homeowner assistance program that's already handed out $1.3 billion to more than 18,000 flooded Mississippi homeowners.

"They just helped me with the process and said they would take care of it," Jones said. "I just hadn't heard from them, and they were very gracious and said they were taking care of it."

Mike Mullins ia another struggling homeowner who found the service center and success in qualifying for a grant.

"I had to wait a little while to get in there," says Mullins. "But they were real helpful, and looked it up and told me everything I needed to do to qualify for Phase Two."

Within the first three hours, MDA workers had already seen more than 40 clients in D'Ibervile. They hope to see that same kind of participation as they visit other locations in the coming weeks.

MDA Spokesman Lee Youngblood said the 80 to 100 new and previous applicants they saw in D'Iberville added to the 179 they served in Pearlington and Pascagoula since the weekend. Youngblood said that shows there is a need for this final dash to deliver information, and maybe even some financial help, before the March 15th deadline.
