Court To Decide Fate Of Cemetery Roadway

A court will decide if Biloxi should close part of Elder Street to preserve the Coast's only Jewish cemetery.

Members of the Congregation Beth Israel asked the city to vacate 74 feet of Elder Street because it runs through the 149-year-old cemetery. There is no indication any graves are under the street, but the congregation members say a cemetery is sacred and should be protected.

The Biloxi City Council decided on Tuesday that an ongoing lawsuit filed by the congregation in 1987 should decide whether the city should give up part of the street.
