First Freshmen Register At USM Gulf Park

It's opening day of registration for summer classes at USM-Gulf Park . However, this orientation is different from the ones held in the past. Besides transfer students, incoming freshmen are also getting a glimpse of life on campus.

"It's been a long time in coming, and this is the first of several sessions where we will have students coming in," USM Gulf Coast Vice President Dr. Jim Williams said.

Angela Brown is among the first group of freshmen to enroll at the Long Beach campus. This is the day she's been waiting for a long time.

"I've waited since 1999 to come here," Brown said. "I'm so excited it's open, you just don't know."

Other freshmen are surprised to learn that they just made history at USM.

"I didn't know this is the first freshmen class today. I was just discovering that," Maria Torres said.

"This is a great milestone for this college, and I'm really excited to be a part of it," Rebecca Southern said.

The first freshmen will be starting classes at USM on May 27th. That's when the summer program begins. However, most of the 75 Freshmen will be attending classes in the fall, starting Aug. 19th.

Current USM faculty members will teach the summer freshmen classes. Ten courses are being offered, including Math, English, Social Studies and Biology.

The university plans to hire four additional faculty members to help with Freshmen classes in the Fall.
