Stennis Papers Available To View Online

The political papers of former U.S. Sen. John C. Stennis and Rep. David R. Bowen can now be searched online through the Mississippi State University Libraries' web site.

School officials say the new online search may soon include the political papers of former U.S. Reps. G.V. "Sonny'' Montgomery, Charles Griffin, and Mike Espy.

"Providing electronic search capabilities is a way to significantly expand the usefulness of the collections to scholars and students,'' said Michael B. Ballard, center coordinator. "This is an ongoing project that in the future will incorporate data from additional collections.''

Ballard said more than a million documents will be accessible for searching at the completion of the process.

"The Stennis collection alone comprises 1,800 boxes of documents,'' he said.

Stennis, D-Miss., joined the Senate in 1947. At the time of his retirement in 1988, he was its oldest member. He died in 1995.

Bowen, D-Miss., represented the 4th District in the House for a decade before leaving office in 1983.
