Biloxi Students Enjoy Sweet Surprise

Blue Bell employees unloaded boxes and boxes of vanilla ice cream in the courtyard at Beauvoir Elementary in Biloxi. Six hundred students and dozens of teachers and staff members stand under a hot sun, wondering what's going on.

"It's a special time for our school. We have a teacher that has won a very special award. So we're going to celebrate today," Principal Susan Brand said.

The celebration honored Debra Melaney. She just won the regional Teacher of the Year award. So Blue Bell came up with a sweet idea -- treat everyone at the school to an ice cream bash.

"It would be tough to bring out ice cream just for her," Blue Bell Branch Manager Wayne Hugo said. "We feel like it's a team effort from the whole school, and we just wanted to reward the whole school."

Students said the party was pretty cool.

"I think it's great, giving everybody ice cream. It's so nice of Blue Bell to do such a thing," sixth grader Jathan Sadowski said.

Being able to celebrate her achievement with the entire school is enough to melt Ms. Melaney's heart.

"It's a little bit overwhelming," she said. "It's really exciting to be able to share it with everybody in the building. This is the best way to celebrate. I can't think of anything better than ice cream on a hot day."

Melaney also received a cooler filled with her favorite ice cream flavor, Dutch Chocolate.

Melaney is now in the running for "Mississippi Teacher of the Year." The winner will be announced on Wednesday, May 15th.
