Hit And Run Leaves Gulfport Man Dead

Saturday, an early morning hit and run in Long Beach has left a Gulfport Man dead, and police are thanking a witness for helping them catch the suspect.

Police say, about 1:30 Saturday morning, Robert Payne was preparing to tow a car on 28th Street in Long Beach, when he was hit by a pick up truck, driven by Robert Burns.

Burns fled the scene, but a witness followed him while on the phone with police about Burns' location.

Long Beach Police caught burns at the intersection of Old Pass Road and Seal Avenue where he was arrested.

Burns was taken to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center. He was charged with Felony D-U-I causing death. His bond has been set at 200-thousand dollars.

According to Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove, Payne died on the scene from blunt force trauma injuries. An autopsy has not yet been completed.
