After 59 years, a Gulfport tradition is moving to Biloxi. The 2008 Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo will be held at Biloxi's Point Cadet.
The event moved north to the Harrison County Fairgrounds after Hurricane Katrina destroyed Rice Pavilion near the Port of Gulfport. Even before that, Fishing Rodeo organizers faced challenges over costs and services with the city of Gulfport.
"Organizers came here because they have had to go to the fairgrounds in Harrison County and they wanted to get back on the beach. So they came here and wanted to know if we could accommodate them," Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway said.
Rodeo President Michael Casano told WLOX News in a statement, "The decision is based upon the Rodeo's determination of site suitability for the 2008 event, and what we thought would present the best location for the Rodeo and its patrons."
The Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo is traditionally held over the July 4th holiday.
