Rescued Art On Page 13

When Katrina roared ashore, Gary Spencer Smith was at his home in Bay St. Louis. As the storm surge engulfed his home, Smith scambled to save hundreds of paintings.

The art was created by Gary's father Laurent Smith who died in 2003.

"I promised my dad I would preserve his paintings" Smith said. Laurent Smith was a recluse so few people are aware of his artistc abilities.

His oil paintings depict coastal landscapes, scenes of New Orleans and images from around the rural south.

Gary is working with several museums in an effort to set up an exhibition of his fathers work.
