New Commander Takes Over At Keesler Air Force Base

A graduate of Biloxi High and the University of Southern Mississippi is the new commander at Keesler Air Force Base.

Brig. Gen. Michael Peterson assumed command of the 81st Training Wing from General Ted Mercer Thursday morning. Peterson served as Director of Communications and Information Systems at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

Peterson also spent his teenage years here on the Coast. He says he's glad to be home again, and proud to be part of the Keesler team.

"I will continue the traditions and the heritage of this great wing, I will maintain and build upon our relationship and partnership with the community along the Gulf Coast, and I will keep us moving on that journey, that vision of producing the world's finest airmen, finest group of warriors that this group has ever seen," Peterson said.

Outgoing Keesler commander, Gen. Mercer, is leaving the Coast to become the new commandant of the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va.
