New Long Beach Chief Hails From The Windy City

The city of Long Beach has officially named a new police chief. Harley Schinker of the Chicago Police Department will become the new chief July first. The aldermen interviewed three finalists at last week's meeting, and say they chose Schinker because of his experience.

Mayor Robert Bass said Tuesday night, "I think the board was particularly impressed with Mr. Schinker being with a large police department, having had a lot of bureaucratic administrative experience dealing with large budgets, and having to deal with a large staff. He brings a true breath of experience that we really didn't think we'd be able to bring into the city of Long Beach."

Schinker will replace interim Chief Randy Cook, who was assigned to the position from the Harrison County Sheriff's Department in mid-February. Cook replaced Mark Dunston, who resigned because of conflicts with the aldermen.
