Keesler Air Force Base Teams Up With Special Athletes

Some very special athletes came to the coast this weekend. The Special Olympics State Summer games attracted about 1,200 Olympians to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi. They competed in events like volleyball, tennis, swimming and bocce.

Each athlete was assigned a member of Air Force personnel as a sponsor. Over the two days, the athlete and the sponsor spent lots of time together, and the athlete gets to stay with his or her sponsor in the dormitory.

Some sponsors say they thing the Special Olympics has a positive effect on all the participants.

"It made me take my life not for granted," said Brianna Oberg, a sponsor. "I'm more appreciative of the little things that I have and that I can do on my own and not have someone help me do."

This is the 16th year that Keesler Air Force has hosted the Summer games.
