Unemployment Rate Up For March

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi's jobless rate rose to 6.9 percent in March, with 3,500 additional people out of work during the month.

The Mississippi Employment Security Commission said Friday that the job losses were in the apparel, textile mills and electronics and transportation industries.

The adjusted state jobless rate in February was 6.6 percent. Nationally, the unemployment rate in March was 6.1 percent.

Curt Thompson, MESC's executive director, said the apparel industry lost 200 jobs in March and was down 2,000 jobs from a year ago. Thompson said bright spots in the economy in March included a 1,700 increase in jobs in retail trade and 900 more jobs in construction.

Total manufacturing jobs increased by 700 during March, but were down 9,100 from a year ago.

Twenty-six counties had double-digit unemployment rates. Issaquena County was the highest at 21.9 percent. Webster County had a 18 percent rate and Holmes and Sharkey counties had 17.4 percent rates.

Lafayette County had the state's lowest unemployment numbers at 2.8 percent. Lamar County was at 3.1 percent.
