Gulfport Church Honors Its Heroes

A Gulfport church was singing the praises of firefighters and other public safety workers on Sunday. Bible Baptist Church paid tribute to public safety workers during its annual Red, Blue and White Sunday. The congregation showed its appreciation to firefighters, police officers and other emergency workers from South Mississippi with songs, poems, and prayers.

The church's pastor, Harold Payne, is also chaplain for the Gulfport police department. He says he started Red, Blue, and White Sunday three years ago to change people's perception of emergency workers.

"So many times people have the wrong perspective of police officers," said Payne. "Usually it's a ticket or a violation but they are everyday to serve and to help and to allow us the freedoms that we have."

Later that night Bible Baptist Church held a second service with a special guest speaker. New York police officer Keith Rivers shared his personal testimony about what went on during the terrorists attacks September 11.
