Pearl River County Inmate Escapes

Maria Novak, 37, of the Nicholson community was visiting her husband, Fredrick Suttle, 35 of Picayune around 10:00 Sunday morning at the Pearl River County Jail.

Pearl River County Sheriff Joe Stuart says at the end of their visit, Suttle approached the door, where a scuffle ensued with deputy William Davis. Stuart says Novak then pulled out a gun and fired five shots. One of those shots hit the deputy in the leg.

Novak and Suttle then got into a car and left the scene, Stuart said. A Poplarville police officer spotted the car and pursued the two for 30 to 40 miles, until the getaway car crashed into a tree.

Novak and Suttle then escaped into the woods off Highway 43 in the Henleyfield community, Stuart said.

A Harrison County deputy in a helicopter spotted Novak around 4:50 Sunday afternoon and brought her to the Picayune Police Department for questioning.

Fredrick Suttle is still at large. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Police say both Novak and Suttle have extensive criminal records.
