Hurricane Season Begins Next Month

The six-month Atlantic hurricane season opens in June.

Colorado State University hurricane guru William Gray predicts 13 named storms, including eight hurricanes, in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea or Gulf of Mexico this year.

At a recent insurance conference in San Antonio, Gray warned Texans that predicting what parts of the coast will see storm activity in a given year -- isn't possible. But he says the state's two-decade period without a catastrophic hurricane is bound to end.

Deadly Tropical Storm Allison arrived last June fifth and the Houston area was deluged. The rain and floodwaters left behind $5 billion in damage and 22 people dead.
