Great American Smoke Out Urges People To Quit

If you're a smoker, the message for you is that it's never too late to become a non-smoker. Thursday is the Great American Smokeout, a day when Americans are encouraged to put down up their cigarettes for good.

The American Cancer Society Gulf Coast Chapter gathered at the smoke-free Port City Café in Gulfport.

Together, community members and area medical staff promoted the health benefits of giving up tobacco. Officials say there is a myth that not everyone can quit.

American Cancer Society Executive director Dennis Warren said, "People have said 'I've been doing it for 40 years, I can't quit smoking.' Oh yes you can, because there are so many different tools to help you quit smoking. The number one thing is the want to. You've got to want to quit smoking."

The American Cancer Society says 2,200 Mississippians will be diagnosed with cancer related illness this year. Of those, 2,000 will die from those illnesses.
