South Mississippi Observes Veterans Day

Monday, many people all over the country have the day off in observance of Veterans Day. It's a day that honors the lives of military veterans.

Over the weekend, there were several ceremonies to thank the nation's veterans. In Gulfport, dozens of people from around the coast showed their appreciation to the living and those who sacrificed their lives for our country.

While some remember the lives lost in battle, others will honor those who continue to fight to protect our country. They hope that a new generation will never take for granted the heroism of our veterans.

"Let me tell you this, they are heroes and what they did is a big deal because again, they made this country what it is today," said Jeff Lawson, master of ceremonies at Sunday's event.

Veterans Day marks the end of World War I in 1918. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the day a national holiday one year later.
