Report Says Mississippi Power Plant Is Tops In Pollution

A report released Wednesday lists Mississippi as one of the most polluted states in the country.

The environmental study is called "Darkening Skies." Local members of the environmental group the Sierra Club want the people of South Mississippi to realize the severe health dangers this represents.

Mississippi is one of the four most polluted states, the study says.

It also ranks power plants individually. The Mississippi Power Plant Jack Watson in Gulfport is first on this national list for the highest increase of Nitrous Oxide emissions since 1995.

Mississippi Power officials say all of their plants meet federal regulations.

"The national government is there to protect the public's health, and there are rules and regulations in place in order to do that," Mississippi Power spokesman Kurt Brautigam said. "Mississippi Power complies with all the rules and regulations."
