Coast bikers were the first to go cruising across the new Biloxi Bay bridge during the bridge's opening ceremony Thursday afternoon. They were also the first to lead the pack, from the Biloxi side, as the rest of the coast lined up to cross the bridge for the first time Thursday night.
"It's a big accomplishment to be able to travel back and forth. It's going to be nice for the coast," says Noah Saunders, biker.
After the bikers, came Buddy, a dog who made history on the coast Thursday night.
Buddy will be the first American Fox Hounddog to cross the bridge," says Melvin Church, Buddy's owner. T
hose who came from the Ocean Springs side weren't short on excitement as they rode across the bridge for the first time.
"We had a great time...We didn't think it would be done so quickly. We thought it would take at least 10 years to get done."
But, as luck would have it, not everyone on a bike got to cross the bridge Thursday night. Ocean Springs resident, Kelly Lane, and three of her friends tried to cross the bridge on bicycles, but minutes before the bridge opened, they found out they couldn't because the bicycle lane has not yet open. But, Lane and her friends said it did not damper their spirits.
"We'll get across sooner or later. We'll be fine. We're just glad the bridge is now open," says Kelly Lane, Ocean Springs.
