Two Car Collision On Highway 53 Kills Four, Critically Injures One

Highway 53 was closed for nearly two hours Saturday night, after a head on collision killed 4 people, and critically injured 1 person.

The accident happened at the intersection of Canal Road and Highway 53.

According to Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove, 38 year old Deborah Stewart of Gulfport was driving westbound , when her car crossed over and hit a car carrying William and Samantha Downs, and set both cars on fire.

The Downs were pronounced dead at the scene, from blunt force trauma injuries.

24-year-old Chris Dafoe, who was riding with the Downs, was taken to Garden Park hospital.

He later died at the hospital  from blunt force injuries to the head and neck.

A fifth person, 25 year old Patricia Williams of Gulfport, who was riding with Stewart, was airlifted to the USA Medical Center.

She is in critical condition after undergoing surgery.

The accident is under investigation, and a toxicology report will be done.
