D'Iberville Turns To A Payne To Run Its Police Force

D'Iberville's city manager says he's found the right man to set up the city's first police department.  Wayne Payne has been chosen to become the city's first police chief. His hiring will become official at Tuesday's city council meeting, if council members ratify his selection.

According to selection committee members, Payne was one of 17 candidates to apply for the D'Iberville chief's position. Only one other application came from a south Mississippi police officer.

This week, the selection committee interviewed five finalists.  City Manager Richard Rose says Payne was the obvious chose.

Payne's responsibility will be to map out what D'Iberville will need to set up its own police department.  Rose said the new chief would be paid between $55,000 and $64,000.

Payne currently works for the Harrison County Sheriff's Department.  He previously served as police chief in Gulfport and Long Beach.
