"I applaud the Biloxi City Council for its recent approval of the Tivoli project in East Biloxi.
This project is now with Mayor Holloway for what I hope is the city's final approval before being considered by the Gaming Commission.
After Hurricane Katrina our state leadership did everything possible to help the gaming industry come back even stronger. Moving on shore was a necessary step in our recovery.
When we take positive steps, we achieve dynamic results. Case in point, the Tivoli project.
We should not fear a backlash for asking the Gaming Commission to consider a one-billion-dollar investment that will create up to 4,000 jobs.
For the same amount of new jobs, the State committed over a billion dollars in incentives and money - over a ten year period - to Nissan and Toyota.
We have a process in place. A process that works. Every project should be judged on its own merits.
The Tivoli project is a one-of-a-kind. It will generate $72 million a year in new taxes; half of which will go to the State and the other half will go to Biloxi and Harrison County.
I ask you to support the Biloxi City Council and encourage Mayor Holloway to approve the Tivoli project in East Biloxi.
Let's not take a billion dollar opportunity for granted."
