Bienville Commons, a new condo community, will soon sit on land off highway 90 in Ocean Springs. Project developers say it's something new to the Mississippi Coast because it mixes retail shops with residential living.
"...With the whole concept of multi-use, everything's going to be right here. The project's going to be a community within itself," said Nicole Nezat with Coastal Property Pros.
Mayor Connie Moran of Ocean Springs especially likes the idea of having the shops mixed in with the residential development.
"We are encouraging some of these multi-family developers to bring in an element of mixed use, commercial, retail, restaurants into their developments so the city can benefit with sales tax revenue," Mayor Connie Moran said.
While the mayor recognizes the economic benefits to the city, Moran says such high-density developments must not take away from the character of the city.
"Ocean Springs is known for its historic charm, single family neighborhoods and older homes. And certainly we relish those, but the new growth on the highway is commercial development. It can stand to have some of the higher density," Mayor Moran said.
As the city continues to grow, Moran says it's important developments add to the city and not take away from what Ocean Springs has always been about.
The condos range in prices from $154,000 to $380,000.
