Spring Break Bypasses The Coast

The Mississippi Gulf Coast is not a spring break vacation spot and tourism officials say they know the reason. There is nothing to attract college students to the area. Misty Velasquez of the Gulf Coast Tourism Bureau says the agency's product is for 21-year-olds and older. She says much of the Coast's tourism product centers around casinos and cultural activities, which are not of interest to college students.

Gaye Aultman of the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce and Amy Brandenstein of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce say their organizations do not promote Spring Break activities. The past two years saw an increase of visitors to the Coast during Spring Break. Black Spring Break, which took place in 2000 and 2001, brought tens of thousands of students to Biloxi.

Black Spring Break activities did not take place this year.
