Mother Of Stillborn Boy Charged With Manslaughter

In what may the first of its kind criminal case in Harrison County, a Biloxi woman has been charged with manslaughter in the death of her stillborn son.

Dana Brook Smith, 38, was arrested Wednesday - one day after giving birth to a stillborn boy at a local hospital. The infant tested positive for cocaine.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove told WLOX News the child was full term, but it's not known yet how long the child had been dead before Smith gave birth.

District Attorney Cono Carana told WLOX News, "I won't discuss the evidence, but we feel this is an appropriate case to make the charge. The case will be presented to a grand jury."

Carana said he believes this is the first manslaughter charge filed in the case of a stillborn baby in Harrison County. Smith is being held at the Harrison County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
