Major Sewage Leak Contaminates Part Of Biloxi's Back Bay

Part of Biloxi's Back Bay is off limits to swimming and skiing because of a major sewage leak. Crews are working to repair the ruptured line in an area of marsh on the north side of Back Bay near Cedar Point.

Environmental officials say people should stay out of the water and refrain from eating raw seafood caught in that area until the advisory is lifted. And fish caught there should be cooked thoroughly to kill any bacteria.

The area the DEQ says is contaminated stretches from the Popp's Ferry Bridge east to Brasher Bayou.

Water samples have been taken to determine the severity of the problem. Test results should be in next week.

Two sections of the beach in Gulfport are also closed to swimmers. A sewage pump station was breached, causing high levels of bacteria in the water from Marcia Avenue east to 36th Avenue.

Part of that area has been closed since Katrina.
