Shelter Under Investigation

Authorities are investigating complaints about the care of animals at the Jackson County Animal Shelter, including a charge that a dog was beaten to death. Jackie McTigue, program specialist at the Tallahassee, Fla., office of the U.S. Humane Society, said she has sent a letter to County Administrator George Sholl complaining of conditions at the shelter.

Among other complaints, McTigue said animals were doused with water and remained cold when employees washed pens. Sholl said the shelter has stopped using county prisoners as employees because they were not following procedures. The county also is studying other changes to improve the care of animals, he said. Sholl said he investigated the charge that a dog had been beaten to death, but found no evidence that the animal had been harmed by a shelter worker.

He added there were no deliberate attempts to splash water on animals.
