IceGators End Sea Wolves Win Streak At Five

The Louisiana IceGators are the best team in the ECHL. Their 45-8 and 3 record backs up that claim. However, the Sea Wolves entered Tuesday's clash having won 5 consecutive games over the high flying IceGators.

The first period was going to end in a scoreless tie until Konstantin Kalmikov slipped the puck past Sea Wolves goalie Luc Belanger with only 5 seconds left in the period.

The first 9 minutes of the second period was dominated by the IceGators. Louisiana would net two 5-on-3 goals. The first off the stick Corey Neilson and the second by Russ Hewson giving the IceGators what looked like a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Coach Bob Woods and his Sea Wolves didn't quit. Steffon Walby netted his 35th goal on the season, setting a new single season record for Mississippi. Brent Gauvreau and Dave Paradise got the assists.

Mississippi's aggressive play continued. Travis Lisabeth let the puck fly, Frederic Cloutier made the initial stop for the IceGators. However, Lisabeth followed up the shot and slipped the puck in the net and at 17:49 of the second period the Sea Wolves trailed 3-2.

The game would remain that way with Luc Belanger stopping 40 of 43 shots on goal for the Sea Wolves, while Frederic Cloutier stopped 25 of 27 shots on goal.

If the Sea Wolves could have beaten Louisiana they would have moved into a second place tie with Pensacola, since Jackson beat the IcePilots 3-1 Tuesday night. Instead the Sea Wolves remain 2 points behind Pensacola, hosting the New Orleans Brass 7:35 p.m. Friday in the Wolves Den.
