As Temperatures Drop, Avoid Making A Deadly Mistake

With temperatures expected to plunge to the mid-20s Tuesday night, many people will be cranking up their heaters or using their fireplaces. To make sure you and your family are safe, there are a few quick, easy tips to follow:

  • Don't leave candles or fires burning unattended.
  • Never burn charcoals indoors or use flammable liquids to start a fire in your fireplace.
  • If you use kerosene or space heaters, make sure you have proper ventilation and keep flammable items like newspapers and clothing away from the heater.  Local fire officials say these heaters should have at least 3 feet of space around them.
  • And lastly, you should make sure you have working smoke alarms in your home.
