Man Arrested For Cockfighting

A Jackson County man has been arrested for allegedly running a cockfighting operation from his home. Moises Barro Torres was arrested after someone called the local animal shelter to report the operation. When deputies arrived, they found five men standing in the back yard of Torres' home as well as evidence of cockfighting.

About 50 chickens were found in cages, some were bleeding and some had steel blades attached to their feet, so they could attack other fighting cocks. Several injured birds were taken to the Jackson county animal shelter.

Deputies say Torres had false identification, and the sheriff's department has contacted U-S Border Patrol to determine whether he is an illegal immigrant or whether he is in the U-S on a work visa.
