Friends, Family Set Up Memorial For Classmate Killed On Friday

Family and friends are trying to cope with the death of a local teen who was killed Friday.

A memorial was set up at the corner of Eastwood Drive in Moss Point in memory of 16-year-old Altoya Croon. She died Friday when her ex-boyfriend, Michael Nettles, shot her then turned the gun on himself.

Sunday night, friends and family left letters, candles, and other souvenirs at this spot in her honor. They say the memorial started off with only a few items, but grew quickly.

"I got here about 4:30 from out of town. I live in Missouri, and it was a lot smaller than it is and it just escalated from there," Croon's father, Alvester Johnson, said. "A lot of emotion, and the emotion is not just felt by the family members, myself and the rest of the family, but the friends. All the writing and stuff on there is from friends and family members also, but evidently she had a lot of friends."

Family members say no funeral arrangements have been finalized yet.
