Big Cleanup Job Left Behind On Coast Beaches

South Mississippi beaches traditionally become a fireworks war zone on Independence Day. Now the carnage has to be dealt with, and that job falls into the hands of the Harrison County Sand Beach Department.

Department Director Bobby Weaver says most of their manpower hit the beaches first thing Thursday morning, dumping trash cans and picking up spent fireworks. Weaver says it will likely take them about a week to complete the cleanup, especially since more fireworks displays along the beach are scheduled for Thursday night.

Shooting fireworks on the beach is actually illegal, but Weaver says the law is generally overlooked on holidays where fireworks are a big part of the celebration.
