Two Harrison County Schools Denied Shelter Status, For Now

Harrison County Supervisors on Monday voted not to make two high schools storm shelters.

Deputy Emergency Director Rupert Lacy asked the Board to make West Harrison High School and D'Iberville High School emergency shelters. FEMA has already allocated $19 million to build the two schools up to shelter standards.

Director Lacy said Monday's vote really was a formality and he has no doubt, once the schools are built, they will be approved in time for next year's storm season.

Supervisors did approve an agreement with the City of Long Beach to send citizens to one of their approved shelters, if necessary.
